Yangarra Estate is a biodynamic wine farm in the McLaren Vale region in South Australia. The Yangarra philosophy centres around producing wines solely from its single-vineyard estate and the property is devoted to the best grape varieties of the southern Rhone. Yangarra's combination of rare geologies, moderate altitude, abundant sunshine and cool evening breezes make it perfect for growing varieties that thrive in these moderate maritime environments.

Planted in 1946 on a sand dune in the cooler, elevated northeast of McLaren Vale. Hand-picked and sorted in the winery, the fermentation is wild. It is a glorious example of grenache picked earlier than in the past, retaining all the freshness of red cherries/berries, spices starting to build, tannins beautifully shaped. Drink to: 2032; Price: $35.00; Date Tasted: Sept 2018; Alcohol: 14%; Rating: 97 Points & Special Value Star; James Halliday Wine Companion

The vines were just over 70 years old at harvest. The thought crosses my mind every now and again that Yangarra may be the best producer in the country. Or is a contender for that mantle, anyway. $35 for this kind of quality is really quite something. It’s a superb grenache. It takes time in the glass to hit its straps but once its does, wow. So intricately tannic, so fresh faced and yet so sturdy, so dialled in. Woodsy spices and red berries, savouriness and sweetness, X factor. Seriously impressive. Alcohol: 14%; Price: $35; Closure: Screwcap; Drink: 2020-2030+; Rated: 96 Points; Campbell Mattinson; The Wine Front
