Established in 1977 by Irishman Dr John Lagan, the Xanadu vineyards now owned by the Rathbone family continue to flourish in a near-perfect viticultural environment that inspired Dr Lagan; rich free draining gravel soils; an abundant water supply and a unique maritime climate. Winemaker Glenn Goodall mirrors the original vision; to produce premium wines that reflect the true character of the region in synergy with the environment and vineyards.
All of the fruit for this Chardonnay is from Block 2 of our Stevens Road vineyard, which is situated on the Boodjidup Brook about 3km from the winery. Fruit from the bottom 20 rows of this mature, low yielding vineyard has consistently produced some of our best Chardonnay each vintage. The pedigree of the vineyard deserves recognition in its own right, so much so that we have again decided to release the best barrels as a Single Vineyard wine.
Gin Gin clone, from 20 rows of Block 2 on the Stevens Road Vineyard, whole-bunch pressed, wild-fermented in French barriques (25% new), no mlf, matured for 9 months. The Reserve Chardonnay has the complexity that this adroitly sidesteps, contesting its own ground with feline grace, every part of its body precisely shaped and weighted, leaving the palate with an airy freshness that will never tire you. Drink to: 2031; Price: $75.00; Date Tasted: Mar 2018; Alcohol: 13%; Rating: 97 Points; Top 100 Wines for 2018; James Halliday Wine Companion
