Established in 1977 by Irishman Dr John Lagan, the Xanadu vineyards now owned by the Rathbone family continue to flourish in a near-perfect viticultural environment that inspired Dr Lagan; rich free draining gravel soils; an abundant water supply and a unique maritime climate. Winemaker Glenn Goodall mirrors the original vision; to produce premium wines that reflect the true character of the region in synergy with the environment and vineyards.
All of the Cabernet fruit for this Wine is from Block 15 of the Stevens Road Vineyard, which is situated on the Boodjidup Brook about 3km from the winery. Fruit from this mature, low yielding vineyard has consistently produced some of our best Shiraz each vintage. The pedigree of the vineyard deserves recognition in its own right, so much so, that we have decided release the best barrels as a ‘Single Vineyard’ wine. Limited to only 125 dozen, the 2015 Stevens Road Cabernet recognises the outstanding quality that this individual vineyard has the ability to produce, and highlights the unique personality of this special site.
Deep, bright, youthful red/purple colour with a lifted fragrance recalling violets and both red and darker fruits, a touch of briar and some tomato bush. It's full-bodied and softly fleshy, chewy-textured and tight-packed, with lots of extract and density. There's a trace of regional peatiness. Very good wine, and it will repay cellaring. Rating 95 Points; Huon Hooke
From Block 3 of the vineyard that Xanadu knows like the back of its hand. Static fermented, 28 days post-ferment maceration, matured for 14 months in French barriques (40% new). Combines elegance with length, intensity and balance. Blackcurrant, earth, black olive and cabernet tannins all chime in on the heavy lifting - this at 14% alcohol tells it all. Drink to: 2030; Date Tasted: Mar 2018; Alcohol: 14%; Rating: 95 Points; James Halliday Wine Companion
