Established in 1977 by Irishman Dr John Lagan, the Xanadu vineyards now owned by the Rathbone family continue to flourish in a near-perfect viticultural environment that inspired Dr Lagan; rich free draining gravel soils; an abundant water supply and a unique maritime climate. Winemaker Glenn Goodall mirrors the original vision; to produce premium wines that reflect the true character of the region in synergy with the environment and vineyards.
Contract-grown fruit is whole-bunch pressed and wild-fermented in French oak (25% new), lees-stirred, mlf prevented, matured for 9 months. Elegantly composed and balanced, with white peach, pear and citrus flavours spread across a lengthy canvas. An each way bet, now or later. Xanadu at work again. Drink to: 2029; Price: $39.00; Date Tasted: Mar 2019; Alcohol: 13%; Rating: 95 Points; James Halliday; Wine Companion
Peach-custard and clotted-cream notes here with attractive lemons, all making for a complex young chardonnay. The drive of rich and concentrated peaches and lemons is impressive, as well as the cool, fleshy tones through the finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap. Alcohol: 13%; Rating: 95 Points; James Suckling
Glenn Goodall favours an energetic style and this packs a punch. Vibrant pink grapefruit, a core of green apple and pear racy and intense with saline minerality. Aged in French oak with lees-stirring. A lip-smacking Chardonnay; finishes pure and long. Drink 2019-2025; Rating: 94 Points; Sarah Ahmed; Decanter
A beautifully aromatic wine with subtle mealy tones and lemony accents. The palate has a fine, tight, intense grapefruity core. Long and lemony. Delicious. Rating: 93 Points; Toni Paterson MW; The Real Review
Bright, light-yellow colour with a bright, fresh, intensely grapefruity aroma, which is very fetching. Very Margaret River regional chardonnay. Fruit-driven, but there are nutty oak-derived highlights as well. There is firm, bright acidity on the aftertaste. It would be best with food as there is a little hardness, but the wine is high quality. Drink: 2018 to 2025; Price: $39.00; Alcohol: 13%; Rating: 92 Points; Huon Hooke; The Real Review
