Established in 1977 by Irishman Dr John Lagan, the Xanadu vineyards now owned by the Rathbone family continue to flourish in a near-perfect viticultural environment that inspired Dr Lagan; rich free draining gravel soils; an abundant water supply and a unique maritime climate. Winemaker Glenn Goodall mirrors the original vision; to produce premium wines that reflect the true character of the region in synergy with the environment and vineyards.
Fruit was sourced from mature vineyards across the Margaret River region; 51% Wilyabrup, 41% Wallcliffe (predominantly estate grown), with the remainder being small parcels of fruit from the Treeton (8%) subregions. Cabernet Sauvignon (89%), Malbec (8%), Petit Verdot (3%)

If 2020 had a calling card, it would be: "1800 tanin 'n fruit." The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon is lush and abundant, veritably spilling over with cassis, raspberry, licorice and bramble. The tannins, too, show their 2020 roots in the firm swell of texture in the mouth. It seems a shame to age this, such is the seductive guile of the youthful fruit at this stage, however it will only increase in complexity and spice as it gets older. Choose your player. Deep crimson. Classic blackcurrant, cedar aromas with dark chocolate, hint leafy notes. Inky deep blackcurrant, praline flavours, fine slinky/al dente tannins, attractive mid-palate density and lovely mocha, espresso complexity. Builds up chocolaty firm at the finish with some tobacco leaf notes. Date: June 2022; Rating: 95 Points; The Vintage Journal
