First produced in 1954, and widely known as ‘Black Label’, Wynns Coonawarra Estate Cabernet Sauvignon has established a reputation for displaying excellent varietal and regional characteristics. The wine is produced from only the top 20-25% of Cabernet fruit available from Wynns Coonawarra Estate.

Medium deep crimson. Lovely blackcurrant pastille, cedar aromas with herb garden, sage notes. Well concentrated with blackcurrant, roasted chestnut, vanilla flavours, classical fine-grained tannins, inky density, beautiful richness and al-dente firm cedary finish with fresh integrated quartz-like line. A gorgeously seductive wine with the fruit complexity, balance and persistence for medium to long term cellaring. A very fine vintage with St Julien-like structure. Rating: 97 Points; Andrew Caillard; Master of Wine

Wynns say it's Australia's most important cabernet based on volume and value of each vintage. It's a model for the flavour and structure of cool grown cabernet with the ace in the hole cards of blackcurrant fruit, firm tannins and balanced oak. Drink By: 2039; Price: $45.00; Date Tasted: 24 Mar 2016; Alcohol: 13.5%; Rating: 96 Points & Special Vale Star; James Halliday; Wine Companion

Very deep, youthful purple colour, with a hi-fi blackcurrant, mulberry nose with a trace of blueberry. It's all about the fruit. The wine is intense and powerful but also supremely elegant, the tannins super-fine. All elements of the wine are in superb harmony. It just needs time. Tasted: July 2017; Drink: 2017 to 2042; Price: $45.00; Alcohol: 13.5%; Rating: 96 Points; Huon Hooke; The Real Review

Assertively oaked, but with the fruit depth and structure to handle it, this is definitive Coonawarra cabernet. Scented with a heady bouquet of cassis, mulberries, violets and tightly knit vanilla/cedar oak backed by nuances of meatiness and dried herbs, it’s long and supple, with a vivacious palate of dark fruit and fine, powdery tannins that soaks up its oak influence. Artfully made and balanced, it’s a long-term classic. Drink: 2034 to 2044; Rating: 95 Points; Jeremy Oliver; Australian Wine Annual

Medium-bodied cabernet sauvignon, with reasonably dense cassis, blackcurrant, cedar, floral, violets and anise. A benchmark example of the variety with excellent cellaring potential. Fine, firm tannins give a solid backbone to the wine. Tasted: August 2016; Drink: 2016 to 2024; Price: $45.00; Alcohol: 13.5%; Rating: 95 Points; Bob Campbell MW

First made 1954, this is one of Australia's most iconic wines. And it is looking better than ever. Simply gorgeous aromatics of cassis, blueberry and violets. The palate is finely crafted, with seamless tailoring. There is intense sweet fruit on the mid-palate and the tannins and fine and plentiful. You will need patience for this one, as it needs time to mature. Tasted: November 2016; Drink: 2019 to 2034; Price: $45.00; Alcohol: 13.5%; Rating: 95 Points; Toni Paterson MW; The Real Review

About as effortless as cabernet can be. It flows, it establishes its credentials, it does just enough and then it sets about creating all the right conditions for it to cellar well. There are briary, bitter herb notes but they work with the fleshy, boysenberried cassis characters. Oak is almost nowhere to be seen. The flavours feel seamless. The longer you sit with this wine the more impressive the tannin structure seams; it unfurls. The impression of the wine s overall quality rises as a result. Drink : 2020 - 2035+; Rating: 94 Points; Campbell Mattinson; The Wine Front

Another cracking wine from this famous label. It’s Coonawarra through and through. Deep blackcurrant and slightly leafy berry aromas. The palate is so deep and concentrated with plenty of weight delivered on an elegant controlled more medium bodied frame. Dusty light iron filings character infuses into the palate too add another degree of intrigue. Price: $45.00; Best drinking: Now to 2036; Rating: 94 Points; Ray Jordan
