What began as a yearly diversion for label designer Aaron Woods and marketer Nicholas Crampton has grown into almost a full time obsession, with a range of wines from the Barossa and Eden Valley spanning five varieties and numerous styles. The ambition of Woods Crampton is to create unforced wines that showcase the quality of their fruit and tell the story of their vineyards. Minimal intervention winemaking follows to create elegant and expressive wines.
Sourced from a number of low yielding old-vine vineyards on the cooler eastern valley slopes, towards Eden Valley. Chilled overnight before primarily de-stemming and cold soak for five days at eight degrees. Fermentation was a cool twenty five degrees in small open two tonne fermenters with fifteen percent whole bunch and twice daily hand plunging. Matured in small and large format oak barrels, primarily French with some American. The thirty percent new oak component is all French oak. Bottled without fining and with minimal filtration.
The nose is very ripe and lifted with primary fruit aromas of dark berries, ripe blood plans and exotic spice with only the lightest hints of oak. The palate is bold and effortless with a depth of spicy, dark berry fruit flavours wrapped in fine tannins before a finish given definition by whole-bunch derived grip and fresh acidity. This wine drinks well now but will improve significantly with twelve months in bottle before aging gracefully for well over ten years.
