Vasse Felix were briefed in the seventies by Margaret River’s founding vigneron Dr Tom Cullity, to make the best possible wine. Heytesbury is a flagship regional Cabernet, the fruits of over thirty years of viticulture at Vasse Felix. Balance, elegance, complexity and restrained power are the hallmarks of Heytesbury, the direct result of an uncompromising approach to quality. Heytesbury embodies the Vasse Felix commitment to excellence, and as such is named after the Holmes à Court family company, to which Vasse Felix is the crowning jewel

Established in 1967, the Vasse Felix estate vineyard is planted at the heart of the Wilyabrup sub region, within the nucleus of premium Margaret River viticulture. Low yielding, dry grown vines planted on some of the world’s oldest soils enjoy long, warm growing seasons and cooling summer breezes from the nearby Indian and Southern Oceans. This moderating effect is responsible for grapes exhibiting exceptional concentration and intensity whilst retaining elegance and finesse. Parcels of ultra premium fruit are fermented separately in small, static fermenters to retain the unique characters of the site before being basket pressed and sent to the finest of French oak barriques

This is a bit of rock 'n' roll that performs brilliantly in Vasse Felix's chardonnay hierarchy. Perfect balance of flavours from grapefruit, lemon pith and delicate leesy-nutty characters with plenty of flint and saline. It's linear, long and pure, with a riff of acidity that keeps the band together. Drink to: 2027; Price: $39.00; Date Tasted: October 2019; Alcohol: 13%; Rating: 96 Points & Special Value Star; James Halliday Wine Companion

Bright, light to medium yellow colour, with an aroma of almond and other freshly-shelled assorted nuts. A very tense, vibrant chardonnay with great flavour and refinement, grapefruity vitality and nervy energy that persists long on the aftertaste. Drink: 2019 to 2027; Price: $39.00; Alcohol: 13%; Rating: 95 Points; Huon Hooke

Such a good chardonnay from this outstanding vintage. So much depth and poise here with a wonderful expression of all that is good in Margaret River. Grapefruit and lightly toasty oak influences with a savoury minerally finish. Exquisite. Rating: 95 Points, Best Wine and Top 100; Ray Jordan, West Australian

The rise and rise of Vasse Felix is filtering down even more emphatically through its tiers, and this is as benchmark as any estate Chardonnay. Tension, fruit, oak and struck-flint reductive complexity all play their part as confidently as expected, yet with greater seamlessness, integration, line and length than ever. For all it represents, this is a phenomenon and a bargain. Rating: 95 Points, Tyson Stelzer; Wine Business Monthly

This has a very elegant and taut, refined feel. Aromas of grilled hazelnuts, peaches, apricot kernel, lemons and wet stones lead to a smooth, refined palate texture, delivering a citrus-fruit focus with a deep build of fleshy peach flavor and textural weight through the finish. Quality in every sense. Drink now. Screw cap. Rating: 94 Points, Nick Stock in James Suckling

This is classic Margaret River and is an excellent intro into both the region’s and this renowned producer’s Chardonnay style. The nose is fruity but delicate, combining melon and peach notes with cashew, wet stone and a briny, seashell nuance. On the beautifully balanced palate, tingly acidity bounces across the tongue, feeling playful beside the creamy texture. The oak is present but plays a supporting role, and there’s a long, saline finish. Drinking blissfully well now but could age until 2028. Rating: 94 Points, Wine Enthusiast Magazine
