Established in 1858 by English immigrant Edward Tyrrell, Tyrrell’s Wines is one of Australia’s pre-eminent family owned wine companies with vineyards extending from their historic home in the Hunter Valley to the Limestone Coast (SA) and Heathcote (VIC). Headed up by fourth generation family member Bruce Tyrrell, Tyrrell’s is home to some of Australia’s most awarded wines including the iconic Vat 1 Semillon. Since 1971, Tyrrell’s has been awarded over 5,000 trophies and medals and in 2010 was named “Winery of the Year” in James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion. With the fifth generation, Chris, Jane and John, involved in the business, Tyrrell’s will continue to remain family owned with the simple philosophy of producing high quality wine that people love to drink.
Bright, light straw-yellow hue. The bouquet a matter of dried herbs and dry grass, savoury and straw-like, while the palate is juicy and lemony, with almost a sensation of sweetness in the middle. Limes, lemons and great intensity of semillon fruit. It's magical how it combines richness with delicacy. It fills the mouth with fruit which lasts and lasts on the beautifully harmonious aftertaste. Drink: 2019 to 2027; Price: $40.00; Alcohol: 11.5%; Rating: 97 Points; Huon Hooke; The Real Review
A famous wine in the context of the Tyrrell's semillon portfolio, a wine of long standing and - curiously - the only single vineyard semillon to be machine-harvested. It has a distinct citrus core allied with minerally acidity, and responds well to lengthy cellaring. Drink by: 2030; Date Tasted: Jan 2019; Alcohol: 11.5%; Rating: 95 & Special Value Star; James Halliday Wine Companion
Perky young fruit driven nose, almost peachy, lemony and well rounded. It sports plenty of juicy flavour (in the context of Hunter Sem), fine acidity, and very good length. Crunchy juicy finish, that, when compared with the other 2014 Tyrrell’s Semillons, is slightly rugged and coarse; time will revolve such minor quibbles. Strong release. More to come. Tasted: Aug 14; Alcohol: 11.5%; Closure: Screwcap; Drink: 2015-2034; Rated: 93+ Points; Gary Walsh; The Wine Front
