Established in 1858 by English immigrant Edward Tyrrell, Tyrrell’s Wines is one of Australia’s pre-eminent family owned wine companies with vineyards extending from their historic home in the Hunter Valley to the Limestone Coast (SA) and Heathcote (VIC). Headed up by fourth generation family member Bruce Tyrrell, Tyrrell’s is home to some of Australia’s most awarded wines including the iconic Vat 1 Semillon. Since 1971, Tyrrell’s has been awarded over 5,000 trophies and medals and in 2010 was named “Winery of the Year” in James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion. With the fifth generation, Chris, Jane and John, involved in the business, Tyrrell’s will continue to remain family owned with the simple philosophy of producing high quality wine that people love to drink.
The vines in the HVD vineyard were planted in 1908 and form the “Sign Post Block”. The vineyard lies between two small creeks that are fed from a spring in the Brokenback range. The vines are rarely stressed and their roots are almost continuously in water. Great soil moisture from the previous growing season meant that the vineyard saw it’s best season in years. Kind weather over Christmas ensured even ripening and flavour development in the bunches. Classic HVD Semillon showing lifted floral aromatics and tightly structured palate with considerable length and a great balance with it’s clean, soft acid structure.
Fresh squeezed lime, vanilla, approachable, zesty but round – the volume of fruit is most excellent – almost flamboyant for such a young wine. Flinty and tight to close. Not an ounce of flab here though, make no mistake. Ripping length. I predict an amazing future for this wine: a toast and lime spectacular to come. Tasted: Jul 13; Alcohol: 11.5%; Closure: Screwcap; Drink: 2016-2033; Rated: 95+ Points; Gary Walsh; The Wine Front
