With thirty years of history and heritage, TarraWarra Estate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay represent the vision of Marc and Eva Besen to produce premium wine crafted to bring out the particular aspects of each vintage while consistently concentrating on balancing structure and elegance. These wines are of great character and depth, reflecting the outstanding quality of the 100% estate grown fruit from the unique microclimate of the site chosen specifically for these varieties.
Made with the same approach as the Reserve wine, this wine is produced from a different selection of fruit parcels and barrel combinations. The wine displays lifted raspberry aromas, with a hint of earthiness and subtle oak. The flavours combine bright fruit with fine tannins, the richness reflecting the warmer year. It will drink well for six to eight years.
The fruit was picked from various blocks with vines aged between 11 and 21 years old, grown on high north facing slopes to maximize sunshine hours. Northerly winds from Long Gully provide good air flow and favourable micro-climates across the Estate. 2018 vintage was one of the best we’ve experienced. Ideal conditions persisted from veraison to harvest. Fruit was hand-picked in excellent condition, with high colour intensity and flavour expression.
MV6, 114, 115 and D5V12 clones, hand-picked, chilled overnight, destemmed, twice-daily pumpovers, matured in French oak (10% new) for 10 months. An elegant iteration of light, but very well balanced, Yarra pinot noir. Drink to: 2030; Price: $30.00; Date Tasted: Feb 2020; Alcohol: 13.5%; Rating: 93 Points; James Halliday Wine Companion
