Established in 1860 Tahbilk is one of Australia’s most beautiful & historic wineries, located in the Nagambie Lakes region of Central Victoria and one of the nation’s premium viticultural areas. The vineyard comprises 200 hectares of vines including whites of Marsanne, Viognier and Roussanne; the reds – Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvedre as well as the traditional varieties. Tahbilk is further blessed with an abundance of “old vine” plantings including Shiraz from 1860, Cabernet Sauvignon back to 1949 and Marsanne from 1927. Tahbilk is the first Australian winery to be carboNZero certified at both an organisation and product level and one of only eight wineries in the world.
Sourced from nearly 30 hectares of vines planted at various times from the 1930s through the early 2000s, Tahbilk Shiraz releases are noted as being fruit driven wines of much flavour and substance. The 2015 offering fits that mould, defined as it is by varietally expressive spice, anise and black pepper characters with rich blackberry, plum and mulberry fruits. Supple and savoury, there are evident dry, black tea tannins to support extended time in the bottle under the right conditions.
The colour isn't particularly deep, but the hue is bright. The wine, too, is fresher and more lively than those of yore. The flavours span blackberry, plum and cherry, the tannins ripe and balanced in a medium-bodied palate. Large oak vats and smaller French and American barrels were used for maturation.
