After managing a B&B in the south of France, Martin and Vivienne Rawlinson were inspired to establish St John’s Road in 2001, with a vision to produce full flavoured, yet elegant, wines which reflect the essence of the Barossa.
The Prophet Shiraz comes from three different blocks within the Resurrection vineyard, Block 4, Hill South and Block 2. The Prophet is a blend of special parcels, making it the embodiment of highly prized Shiraz vines from the Resurrection Vineyard, Ebenezer and the Northern Barossa sub district.
Dark red with purple youthful rims. Perfumed nose full of thyme, sage, plum and fresh berries, added complexities of leather and spice. Crunchy, lovely fruits of plum and blackberry, quintessential shiraz like fruits that balance perfectly with the oak flavours present. Fine tannins and softness on the midpalate give a round smooth sweetness.
This wine is deeply coloured and shows its Ebenezer home on its sleeve with blackberry, cocoa and tarry fruits supported by some cedar oak complexity. The wine is then bold and ripe on the palate in a fleshy style but retains that savoury tarry edge adding plenty of interest. Tannins are supple and they help to support what is quite a long finish. Drink: 2020-2026; Price: $30.00; Alcohol: 14.5%; Rating: 92 Points; Angus Hughson; Wine Pilot
