After managing a B&B in the south of France, Martin and Vivienne Rawlinson were inspired to establish St John’s Road in 2001, with a vision to produce full flavoured, yet elegant, wines which reflect the essence of the Barossa.
The Evangelist is sourced from three vineyards stretching across three integral sub-districts of the Barossa. Opaque crimson-red with purple hues. Perfumed nose, rich notes of blood plums and blackcurrant. An underlying scent of violet flowers and a hint of mocha. Polished style of Barossa Shiraz, well structured and complex palate; tiers of primary fruit, tight-grained French oak, savoury spice and rich mocha are all perfectly held together with tight-knit tannins and a lengthy finish.
38% ex 57yo Eden Valley vines, 62% ex 82yo bushvines at Stone Well, fermented separetly, 8-9 days on skins, matured for 18 months in French hogsheads (50% new). A remarkable acheivement in the light of the chaotic '16 vintage, the freshness imbued bu the modest alcohol. A truly lovely wine, flowing red and black fruits the key. Screwcap. Drink to: 2036; Alcohol: 13.5%; Rating: 96 Points & Special Value Star; James Halliday; 2019 Wine Companion
