The Agricultural Company Giovanni Sordo is in the heart of the well-known Barolo region, in the municipality of Castiglione Falletto - just a few kilometers away from Alba, in the province of Cuneo. It is a family run winery, now in the hands of Giorgio - Giovanni's son - the third generation of a family who has been tending and producing wines for more than a century. The estate was founded in 1912 by the great-father Joseph, but the real turnover came with His son John who - together with His Wife Mary, the real witness of the family's story - bought several vineyards of Nebbiolo for Barolo - the Sorì in Piedmontese language - among the best in the Barolo wine district.
Barolo Ravera come from a vineyard which extends along the sun-facing hillside in the surrounding of Novello and is wholly exposed to midday. Novello’s winegrowers have always considered this area as one of the top sites for the Nebbiolo growing.
This wine surprises for the tone, intensity and clearness of its ruby red colour which – thanks to its garnet glints – shows a crystalline brilliance. Copious legs and tears promise an extraordinary largesse. Its bouquet is intense, full and lingering; it recalls dried roses, alpine flowers and noble wood. At a first taste the impression is of enveloping warmness which will lead to a great structure – well-balanced thanks to the ripe tannins: they are the quintessence of Nebbiolo. Nuanced and lingering aromas and good acidity makes the Ravera a pleasing and charming wine.
Raspberry, sugared almond, brown spice, chocolate, perfume. Red fruit sweetness, jubey, softer structure, fine dusting of tannin and spicy perfume. Long finish. Clean and very good. Tasted: Feb 2020; Rated: 94 Points; Gary Walsh; The Wine Front
Ferrous, bloody whiffs, scents of cherry-raspberry freshness, salty liquorice. Flavours similar, quite sweet, let’s say fruity, fresh and soft, supple and then a nice, gentle pucker of tannins. Some earthiness in there, a little meat drippings and cool acidity to finish. Has a lot going for it. Charming. Tasted: Feb 2020; Rated: 94 Points; Mike Bennie; The Wine Front
Other selections made on the same order will be dispatched together in late April.
