The Agricultural Company Giovanni Sordo is in the heart of the well-known Barolo region, in the municipality of Castiglione Falletto - just a few kilometers away from Alba, in the province of Cuneo. It is a family run winery, now in the hands of Giorgio - Giovanni's son - the third generation of a family who has been tending and producing wines for more than a century. The estate was founded in 1912 by the great-father Joseph, but the real turnover came with His son John who - together with His Wife Mary, the real witness of the family's story - bought several vineyards of Nebbiolo for Barolo - the Sorì in Piedmontese language - among the best in the Barolo wine district.
This exceptional vineyard is to be found in Perno, a village under the municipality of Monforte d’Alba, and it is among the best of the area.
Its extraordinary colour – an intense ruby-red tinged with garnet shades – shows the wine’s youth, not yet ripe after the first years of maturation. Transparent and brilliant, the beautiful legs and tears coursing the sides of the glass show both its generous alcoholic content and the abundant extractive compounds. Its bouquet is frank, intense, full-bodied and complex. The perfume reminds mature fruit, cacao, noble woods, mint and sweet spices. At a first taste the sensation is of intense, pleasing and sweet warmness. Mature tannins match perfectly with the sapidity of this wine, making the Perno a noble, austere and full-body wine. The aging is one of the mainstays of this wine which gives its best when ripe. The Perno is an extraordinary wine with great structure, balance and harmony and an amazing longevity.
The colour has that typical Monforte orange tinge, and the bouquet is classic brick-dust, shielding perfumes of dried flowers and dried herbs. The structure is massive, with monumental tannins which are very firm and drying, but they're good quality tannins. A wine of hidden layers. It's savoury and dry but there is a deep-set core of sweet liqueur-cherry fruit. Drink: 2019 to 2035; Price: $125.00; Alcohol: 14.5%; Rating: 95 Points; Huon Hooke; The Real Review
