Shaw + Smith is an alliance between cousins Martin Shaw and Michael Hill-Smith. Their aim is to make contemporary, high quality wines that are outstanding examples of their type made from grapes grown in the Adelaide Hills. Shaw + Smith specialise in grape varieties suited to the cooler climate of the Adelaide Hills, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay & Shiraz.
This exceptional Shiraz illustrates why the Shaw + Smith wines are multi-award winners. A medium-bodied red, it demonstrates the beauty in balance over power. Fresh red berries including raspberry and blueberry are flavoured with notes of clove and black pepper. The palate is long and layered with elegantly fine grained tannins. Pair it with a wagyu burger with bacon, gruyere cheese and pickle.
Very attractive blueberries and dark plums here with earthy and spicy aromas, as well as black pepper. The palate is filled with fleshy fruit and has dark-cherry, cherry-liqueur and dark-chocolate flavors in abundance. Long flavors, plush smooth tannins and certainly a richer iteration of this wine. Drink or hold. Rating: 95 Points; Nick Stock for James Suckling
Delicious. A full-bodied, powerful wine loaded with pepper and spice notes, and some gentle vegetal overtones, possibly from whole-bunch inclusion. Dark berries, licorice and graphite galore. There are liberal tannins that impart the right touch of firmness. Tasted: Oct 2020; Rating: 95 Points; Australian Gourmet Traveller WINE
Fantastic release. Stunning length, a wide array of flavours, top tier tannin and the (velvety) texture to match. Cloves, nuts, cherry-plum. graphite, woodsmoke. Cool climate profile with a warmth in its heart. I drank a couple of glasses but I was convinced from the first sip. My only real question was whether it was 95 or 96. Tasted: Aug 20; Alcohol: 14%; Price: $49; Closure: Screwcap; Drink: 2020-2032+; Rated: 95 Points; Campbell Mattinson; The Wine Front
