Rochford Wines is a family owned winery, located on Maroondah Highway in Victoria’s Yarra Valley. Rochford’s senior winemaker Marc Lunt, says his approach to winemaking is drawn from the traditional Burgundian’s philosophy that, “you don’t make wine; you merely accompany it from vine to bottle”, and in his own words, “produce the best fruit possible in the vineyard, handle the fruit gently to preserve fruit character, minimise extraction and allow the wines to express the individuality of the vineyard and each growing season”.
20yo vines from four vineyards, wild yeast open-fermented with 20% whole bunches, 19 days on skins, matured for 10 months in barrel (20% new). Counter intuitively has the deepest and brightest colour; a rich powerhouse that has no right to be as good as it is. Perfectly pitched spices illuminate both the bouquet and palate, whole bunches playing a role, as do tannins.
