Since 1908, four generations of the Redman family have been crafting premium red wines from Coonawarra's terra rossa soil. The wines are typically Australian, bold and flavoursome, made to drink now and to age for years to come.

40yo vines, crushed, open-fermented, 7 days on skins, matured in French oak (25% new) for 12 months, six gold medals, four trophies. A great example of hands-off winemaking, and of the very best of the Redman medium-bodied style. Cassis fruit, modest French oak and ripe but fine tannins are seamlessly woven together. The X-factor? Picked at perfect ripeness, down to the very days. If the wine had a screwcap it would be a 40-year proposition. Drink to: 2035; Price: $33.00; Alcohol: 14.2%; Rating: 96 Points & Special Value Star; James Halliday; James Halliday Wine Companion

Black fruit, rich shag tobacco, aniseed, cedar and the like. Full bodied, a wonderful ball of black fruit in the mid-palate, but savoury too with dark chocolate and tobacco, firm almost chalky open-weave tannin, balanced acidity, and a black olive laced finish of excellent length. No complaints here. Classic Coonawarra. Tasted: Oct 17; Alcohol: 14.2%; Price: $33; Closure: Cork; Drink: 2018 - 2035; Rated: 93+ Points; Gary Walsh; The Wine Front
