Pirramimma was founded by Alexander Campbell Johnston in 1892 and has been owned and operated by the Johnston family ever since. Winemaking at Pirramimma has been a family affair for over 126 years and is now in the capable hands of Geoff Johnston, a winemaking graduate of Charles Sturt University, grandson of the winery’s founder.

We dedicate the 1892 collection in honour and respect for the Pirramimma Clydesdales whom tirelessly toiled our land from 1892 to 1952, whom now rest in peace in our War Horse vineyard. This late ripening variety benefited from a long cool vintage which enhanced optimum varietal character. The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon displays a bouquet of black briary fruit, glazed cherry and spicy plum, with hints of cigar box and violets, with the palate delivering ripe blackcurrant, Morello cherry, red capsicum and chocolate notes, complemented by hints of mint and cedar. A rich beautifully textured wine with oak, fruit and tannin in harmony.

Sweetly fruited and richly expressed, the fabulously expressed bouquet shows blackberry, dried cherry, leather, smoked meat and vanilla characters. It’s equally attractive on the palate, displaying excellent weight and intensity, leading to a lengthy smooth finish. At its best: now to 2026. Date Tasted: Oct 2020; Price: $30.00; Rating: 94 Points; Sam Kim; Wine Orbit
