Bodegas Muriel is one of four wineries owned by the Murua Family which has a history of dealing in wine dating back 85 years - making them a relative young gun in Rioja! Indeed it was only in 1986 that the existing bodega was established and production is now made from both purchased vineyards as well as imperative contract grower relationships forged all the while the family dealt in wine.
Sweetly fruited and richly savoury at the same time, the wine shows lifted aromas of spiced cherry, plum, dark mushroom and toasted almond characters with nuances of smoked game and floral. The palate is juicy and flavoursome, delivering succulent fruit flavours together with meaty, savoury undertones, wonderfully framed by fine texture and polished tannins. Drink to 2020; Rating: 92 Points; Sam Kim; Wine Orbit
Red fruit, spice, vanilla and coconut. Medium-bodied, red fruits with a layer of vanilla biscuit oak, supple tannin, perhaps some sausage savouries, and a clean finish with silty tannin cleaning up. Good job. You get what you came for. Alcohol: 13.5%; Price: $24; Drink: 2018-2020+; Rating: 90 Points; Gary Walsh; The Wine Front
This has bright red cherries and berries and gently earthy complexity. The palate has medium body and smoothly arranged fruit with nutty, ripe tannins. Drink now. Rating: 90 Points; James Suckling
This deep dark red-hued wine has a wonderfully fragrant bouquet like blackberry jam infused with cedar and mint and the flavours are crammed with plums, cherries, spice and liquorice with sappy vanillin oak and perhaps a hint of tobacco. It’s bright in the mouth with silky tannins, a meaty richness and an underlying tarry savouriness and the lingering finish is long, juicy and flavoursome. Sue Courntey, wineoftheweek.com
Earthy aromas of ripe berry fruits blend well with spicy oak and vanilla notes. A lively palate with bright acidity puts out flavors of spiced plum, tomato, red currant and dried earth. This is a classic Rioja crianza that's honest, fresh and eminently drinkable over the next few years. Wine Enthusiast
