Mr Hugh refers to winemaker Hugh Cuthbertson, who has been making wine off the Penbro vineyard in Victoria’s Yea Valley for years. White Pony is a cheeky reference to the iconic Bordeaux winery, Cheval Blanc.
Subtitled 'White Pony', it's not quite Cheval Blanc but it's a very attractive cabernet franc in its own way. There's elegance about this; the bouquet and seamless palate are suffused with toasty red berries enhanced by a touch of perfume, and it finishes strongly with a tangy sour-cherry-like astringency of real persistence. Drink to: 2028; Closure: Screwcap; Alcohol: 13.5%; Rating: 94 Points; Steven Creber; James Halliday Wine Companion
Deep red colour with a good tinge of purple, the bouquet herbal and aromatic, typical of the grape, with sinewy tannins and a little edginess. There's a little bitterness with a gritty aftertaste. Very good intensity of fruit and ripe varietal character. Drink: 2021 to 2031; Price: $55.00; Alcohol: 13.5%; Rating: 90 Points; Huon Hooke; The Real Review
