Established in 1972 Mountadam High Eden estate is Australia’s first cool climate vineyard. Situated on a unique rocky outcrop ranging in elevation up to 550m, the vineyards have a commanding easterly aspect over the Eden Valley. This wine is made using tradition methods and is a blend of the exclusive multi clonal resources available on the estate.
The parcels of Chardonnay were harvested in a three week period starting early March 2017. The fruit was harvested at night into small picking bins and gently pressed using a bag press. In order to increase complexity a parcel of the wine was barrel fermented and returned to tank after fermentation. Post fermentation the wine was lees stirred in tank for 10 weeks, prior to stabilisation and blending.
On release the wine is bright and fruity. It has lifted ripe honey dew melon characters, underlying peach and hints of lemon. The wine has lashings of stone fruit and citrus on the palate. It has a round mid-palate and a bright citrus like finish.
Bright and youthfully expressed, the inviting bouquet shows ripe peach, rockmelon, apple and vanilla characters with subtle oatmeal complexity. The palate is ripe and beautifully rounded, delivering lovely fruit purity together with elegant complexity, leading to a lingering creamy finish. At its best: now to 2023. Rating: 92 Points; Sam Kim
