Montara is owned by the Stapleton family, who acquired the vineyard in 2006 after a long history in the Australian export and agribusiness industries. They chose the property for its scenic location and suitability for premium wine production. This dynamic group of six siblings has given Montara a youthful exuberance, where tradition meets a new era of winemaking.
Free-run and pressings kept separate, a small percentage of the free-run wild-fermented in French oak. No colour development; has real traction and grip (in the best sense); sticky acidity unusual but very attractive, a by-product of the barrel fermentation and retention of 4g/l residual sugar. Drink by: 2038; Price: $30.00; Date Tasted: Feb 2019; Alcohol: 12%; Rating: 96 Points & Special Value Star; James Halliday Wine Companion
Pale colour with a "bottled yesterday" sensibility. A compelling nose of minerals; lime and soda. There's concentration of lime skin, and somehow refinement at the same time. Very good Riesling. A wine of personality that speaks of impeccable viticulture. Drink: 2019 to 2028; Price: $27.00; Alcohol: 12%; Rating: 92 Points; Nick Butler; The Real Review
