Located high in the hills of Barberino Val d'Elsa in Chianti Classico, the splendid villa of Monsanto dominates the valley below. Monsanto ("my saint") was named in honor of Saint Ruffiniano, who died here in 998 B.C., along with 150 other people involved in a battle. Castello di Monsanto is widely considered one of the top dozen Chianti Classico estates of today, especially if its top wine, the Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggio, is mentioned.
The Chianti Classico Riserve comes from a selection of grapes from vineyards which are more suitable for long maturing. Vinified in steel with a maceration of about 20 days, and as a second passage, it is aged in smaller wooden barrels for about 18 months, to then rest for a minimum of 3 months in glass. Composition of the grapes : 90% Sangiovese and 10% Canaiolo and Colorino.
Aromas of plums, cherries and hints of green olives. White truffles and deep earth, too. Full-bodied, so layered and beautiful with a fabulous texture and ripe tannins. It is so pure and minimalist in the end, showing the effect of traditional, hands-off winemaking. Don’t miss this. Decant before serving. One for the cellar. Drink or hold. I'm on record as having a preference for Chianti over Brunello...I love wines that have a core of deep fruit, yet are essentially savoury in flavour profile, and here is one such wine. Lightly smoky, dark cherry, tobacco, walnut and almond paste. Medium-bodied, but thick in structure and taste, with a bed of fine sooty tannin, clean acidity, and more delicious and nourishing tannin on a long firm finish. Terrific. Needs a bit of cellaring, mind you. Tasted: Oct 18; Alcohol: 14%; Price: $60; Closure: Cork; Drink: 2022-2035; Rating: 95 Points; Gary Walsh; The Wine Front
Tight and tannic for now, featuring cherry, black currant, leather, iron, juniper and tar flavors. Firmly structured, meaty and balanced on the tannic side, with a lingering finish. Best from 2021 through 2035. 26,000 cases made. Tasted: Oct 18. Rating: 94 Points & Smart Buy; Bruce Sanderson; Wine Spectator
