Mayard is a family-run estate nestles in the heart of the prestigious village of Châteauneuf du Pape. It is currently managed by Françoise, Béatrice and Didier Mayard, from the fifth generation of owners. The estate spreads across 43 hectares, featuring a huge diversity of terroirs and grape varieties.
Vignobles Mayard Clos du Calvaire is a blend of 80% Grenache , 10% Syrah and 10% Cinsault from vines that are 40 years of age on average. The wine is aged in cement vats. Close to 3,500 cases are produced each vintage.
Mainly Grenache with some Syrah and Cinsault. Lighter style of CdP, and none the worse for it. Fresh, red fruits, smattering of dried herb perfume, light grainy tannin, juiciness and some finesse here – not over-done – and good to drink. Should age well, and surely. Some typical peanut flavours in the aftertaste too. Thoroughly charming. Alc: 14.5%; Price: $60; Closure: Cork; Drink: 2017-2024+; Rated: 92 Points; Gary Walsh; The Wine Front
Ripe, smoke-tinged cherry and dark berries on the nose and in the mouth. Subtly sweet black raspberry, cherry and lavender pastille flavors tighten up slowly on the back half. Picks up a hint of succulent herbs with aeration and finishes taut and youthfully tannic. Josh Raynold; Vinous
