Larry Cherubino has had a particularly distinguished winemaking career, first at Hardys Tintara, then Houghton, and thereafter as consultant/Flying Winemaker in Australia, NZ, South Africa, the US and Italy. He has developed three ranges: at the top is Cherubino; next The Yard, single vineyard wines from WA; and at the bottom the Ad Hoc label, all single region wines. The range and quality of his wines is extraordinary, the prices irresistible.
Ad Hoc is an assembly of varietal wines for any occasion, each wine sourced from its best-suited region in Western Australia. Almost transparent in colour, this wine shows great purity and refinement. A fragrant bouquet, with flavours of lemon peel and bath salts all carried along by a soft texture and long fine acid.
Larry Cherubino pulls rabbits out of hats wherever, whenever and with whatever varieties he grows. This riesling surges with a wave of citrus, Granny Smith apple and nashi pear on entry to the mouth, leaving a lingering taste fiesta as the wave recedes. Ludicrous value. Drink to: 2027; Price: $21.00; Date Tasted: Nov 2019; Alcohol: 12.5%; Rating: 94 Points & Special Value Star; James Halliday Wine Companion
