Larry Cherubino has had a particularly distinguished winemaking career, first at Hardys Tintara, then Houghton, and thereafter as consultant/Flying Winemaker in Australia, NZ, South Africa, the US and Italy. He has developed three ranges: at the top is Cherubino; next The Yard, single vineyard wines from WA; and at the bottom the Ad Hoc label, all single region wines. The range and quality of his wines is extraordinary, the prices irresistible.
Ad Hoc is an assembly of varietal wines for any occasion, each wine sourced from its best-suited region in Western Australia. Almost transparent in colour, this wine shows great purity and refinement. A fragrant bouquet, with flavours of lemon peel and bath salts all carried along by a soft texture and long fine acid.
Wallflower indeed. The bouquet is full of high-pitched citrus and wild flower aromas, the palate beating a tattoo of drums with its intensity and insistent length. The name suggests it's a shy and unuassuming wine, and I totally disagree with that. The value offered needs no comment. Drink by: 2030; Price: $21.00; Date Tasted: Sept 2018; Alcohol: 12%; Rating: 95 Points; Top 100 Wines for 2018; James Halliday Wine Companion
