The name isole e olena came about in the 1950s when two adjoining estates, isole and olena, were purchased by the De Marchi family and combined to form one. The history of both estates dates back many hundreds of years, and the earliest documentation of the village of Olena goes as far back as the 12th century. During the 1950s, the De Marchi family planted new specialised vineyards and expanded the cellars. Today, the estate is run by Paolo De Marchi and his wife Marta. Paolo comes from a family with three generations of winemaking experience in the northern part of Piemonte and his older son, Luca, now runs the family estate there, Proprieta Sperino.

A super-ripe bouquet of blackberry, dark cherry and hints of licorice and chocolate. Full bodied, rich and fruit-sweet for Chianti Classico, not an extreme savory style but more plush. Soft, supple tannins. Sumptuous wine. Drink: 2021 to 2033; Rating: 94 Points; Huon Hooke; The Real Review

This is a really authentic and beautiful Chianti Classico, offering cherries, orange peel and light undertones of nuts and bark. It’s medium-bodied, very polished and integrated with a fresh, juicy finish. Drink now. Rating: 93 Points; JamesSuckling .com

From the Tuscany wine region, Isole e Olena 2018 Chianti Classico is dry, medium-bodied and vibrant with ripe dark cherry, sarsaparilla, red plum, dried savoury herbs and subtly spiced. Tannins are firm. Good now, better in 2022. Produced from mostly Sangiovese grapes sourced from the Insole e Olean estate in Tuscany. Rating: 92 Points; Natalie Maclean

With 114,000 bottles produced, this is a terrific value buy from one of the best performing estates in the appellation. The 2018 Chianti Classico is made with 82% Sangiovese that has been blended with 15% Canaiolo and 3% Syrah from a mix of sandstone, galestro and alberese soils. The wine is fresh and fruit forward with bright berry aromas over easy spice and smoky tar. Date: Oct 2021; Drink: 2021-2026; Rating: 91 Points; Monica Larner; Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate

Besides a healthy dose of Canaiolo Nero, proprietor Paolo De Marchi blends in a dash of Syrah to give backbone, especially in lighter vintages - he believes it to be less invasive than other international varieties. Fragrantly expressive, enticing notes of aromatic herbs, rose, fennel, clove and fresh forest floor greet the nose. While wonderfully medium in weight, this packs a lot in, especially tangy blackcurrant. Chalky tannins are subtly assertive and will carry the wine through the midterm. Drinking window 2022-2030. Rating: 92 Points; Decanter
