Founded by husband-and-wife duo Mike and Claire Allan in 1996, Huia Vineyards is one of Marlborough’s only producers dedicated to the production of minimal intervention, organically farmed wines. The winery remains family-owned and operated today.
On the nose the Huia Pinot Noir shows notes of spice, violets and dark cherry. The palate is rich and full with plum and dark cherry alongside hints of spice and savoury notes.
Medium to full ruby to brick-red colour, with somewhat forward-development evident on the bouquet as well. It's smoked-charcuterie and roasted-meaty and there is a nice core of sweet fruit at the centre, surrounded by savoury drying tannins which are in balance. A really delicious drink, very complex, even if it's a trifle forward. Drinking well now and good value. Date Tasted: May 2021; Alcohol: 13.3%; Drink: 2021 to 2026; Price: $45.00; Rating: 94 Points; Huon Hooke
Smooth, savoury pinot noir that is showing the benefits of a little bottle-age with integrated plum, dark cherry, dried herb and 'forest floor' flavours. A nicely-textured wine with gently mouth-watering acidity. Date Tasted: February 2021; Alcohol: 13.3%; Drink: 2021 to 2024; Price: $45.00; Rating: 93 Points; Bob Campbell MW
