The acclaimed Henschke family, foundation members of Australia’s First Families of Wine, was one of the pioneering families of South Australia when Johann Christian Henschke migrated from Silesia (Germany in 1841). Each generation has contributed to the legend with fourth generation Cyril Henschke pioneering varietal, single-vineyard wines in the 1950s, most famously Mount Edelstone and Hill of Grace Shiraz. Fifth-generation winemaker Stephen and his viticulturist wife Prue have won many awards for their talent, innovation and integration of vineyard and winery. They lead the way with environmental, biodynamic and organic principles. Henschke wines are handcrafted and deeply personal, reflecting the unique terroir of vineyards: the wine names tell either a personal story of the family or the cultural history of their region.
Keyneton Euphonium is a beautiful composition of shiraz from up to 50-year-old vines growing in the Eden and Barossa Valleys, blended with cabernet sauvignon, merlot and cabernet franc from selected vineyards in both regions; some of which were planted by Cyril Henschke at his Eden Valley property in the 1960s.
57% Shiraz, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc
Medium deep crimson. Fresh blackberry, dark plum, raspberry, dark chocolate espresso aromas with savoury roasted walnut/cedar notes. Concentrated blackberry, dark plum, mulberry fruits, attractive chinotto, negroni notes, sinuous velvety fine tannins and integrated roasted walnut oak. Finishes chocolaty firm with plentiful ripe dark fruits and savoury notes. Richly flavoured wine with lovely volume, texture, freshness and balance. Drink early or keep for a while. Matured in French and American hogsheads (18% new) for 18 months. The bouquet does indeed bellow from the glass like that a euphonium. It has a swag of red, black and purple fruits all in tune, something very different for drinking now. Drink to: 2026; Price: $60.00; Date Tasted: Mar 2020; Alcohol: 14.5%; Rating: 95 Points & Special Value Star; James Halliday Wine Companion
This is a spectacular Euphonium with the most detail and exuberance I have seen from this label. This is a mighty release and a wine that offers a true sense of Australian vinous history at the same time as rewarding you with incredible value for money. If you want to experience the Henschke magic, with TGAR heritage, while embracing a fabulous vintage and a fairly forward disposition, this is IT! Rating: 18.5 Points (Gold Medal); Matthew Jukes
