Head Wines was started in 2006 by Alex Head. It focuses on single site Rhone Varietals from the Barossa and Eden Valleys in South Australia. The House style is one of elegance, freshness, balance and purity of fruit attained by a combination of low yields, early picking, slow-winemaking and careful, gentle attention during elevage. Each Head Wine not only represents Alex Head's strong views on what makes balanced, drinkable wines but a guarantee of absolute quality, value and consistency.

Earthy, coffee grounds, dark spices, black fruit, dried mint, a touch of tar. Full bodied, dense well-packed, almost silty tannin, richness and spice, almost sticky feel in the mouth – like slow-cooked ribs – dark spice theme continues, drying and firm on a long finish. Savoury. Deep. Throbbing. It’s excellent. Tasted: Oct 17; Alcohol: 14.5%; Price: $60; Closure: Screwcap; Drink: 2018-2036; Rated: 95 Points; Gary Walsh; The Wine Front

From Moppa Hill, on the highest part of the Western Ridge of the Barossa, with an easterly aspect so it only captures morning sun. Rich and deep, with an abundance of flavours, yet never dipping into overripe territory. Perfect balance in every respect, the vortex of fruit, spice and integrated oak leading onto the full-bodied palate, greeted by velvety tannins and an overwhelming desire for another glass. Drink to: 2040; Price: $60.00; Date Tasted: Jan 2018; Alcohol: 14.5%; Rating: 97 Points & Special Value Star; James Halliday Wine Companion
