Head Wines was started in 2006 by Alex Head. It focuses on single site Rhone Varietals from the Barossa and Eden Valleys in South Australia. The House style is one of elegance, freshness, balance and purity of fruit attained by a combination of low yields, early picking, slow-winemaking and careful, gentle attention during elevage. Each Head Wine not only represents Alex Head's strong views on what makes balanced, drinkable wines but a guarantee of absolute quality, value and consistency.
There's a lot happening here, all of it good. 80% is sourced from the Eden Valley, 20% the Barossa Valley, co-fermented on skins for 14 days, matured in French oak (10% new), the barrel size ranging from 225l to 2250l. There's a poultice of red and black fruits and ribbons of fine, ripe tannins. You can't deny a wine like this. Drink to: 2038; Price: $25.00; Date Tasted: Sept 2019; Alcohol: 14.5%; Rating: 96 Points & Special Value Star; James Halliday Wine Companion
High perfume, blueberry coulis, blackberry, spice and sage, ironstone. Medium-bodied, succulent, intense fruit of perfume and weight, dark chocolate tannin, savoury elements, very long fresh finish. Super vintage. Puppy like in enthusiasm as at now. Almost 94 points, though that’s kind of arbitrary. Tasted: April 2019; Alcohol: 14%; Price: $25; Closure: Screwcap; Drink: 2020-2085+; Rated: 93 Points; Gary Walsh; The Wine Front
