Head Wines was started in 2006 by Alex Head. It focuses on single site Rhone Varietals from the Barossa and Eden Valleys in South Australia. The House style is one of elegance, freshness, balance and purity of fruit attained by a combination of low yields, early picking, slow-winemaking and careful, gentle attention during elevage. Each Head Wine not only represents Alex Head's strong views on what makes balanced, drinkable wines but a guarantee of absolute quality, value and consistency.

50% grenache, 30% mataro and 20% shiraz from 25-76yo vines, wild yeast-open fermented with 10% whole bunches, 14 days on skins, daily plunging and pumpovers, 500 dozen made. Beautifully and harmoniously structured and textured, clarity and purity its watchwords. Drink to: 2030; Price: $26.00; Date Tasted: Feb 2020; Alcohol: 14.2%; Rating: 96 Points & Special Value Star; James Halliday Wine Companion

Raspberry jubes, pretty, some spice, hazelnut and peanuts. Medium-bodied, fresh, light tannin but enough to shape it, even feel, balance and high drinking appeal, slightly sticky texture on a finish that’s clean and pretty long, a sprinkling of dried herb in the aftertaste. Vibrant, even a little bit ‘minerally’. A bit of a delight, as it were. Tasted: Feb 2020; Alcohol: 14.4%; Price: $25; Closure: Screwcap; Drink: 2020-2025+; Rated: 93 Points; Gary Walsh; The Wine Front
