Glenlofty Estate’s vineyards sprawl across the foothills of the Pyrenees appellation in Western Victoria. Here the climate, ancient granitic soil types and varying slopes mirror those of France’s northern Rhône region. The vineyards were planted in 1995 and until 2010 sent their cool-climate premium fruit for blending into high-end wines under Seppelts and Penfolds labels. In 2010 the vineyards were acquired by the pioneering Richmond-Smith family, well-known in Australian agriculture since 1839.
The Ridge Block is one of the top blocks each year, this parcel standing out and separately vinified, matured in French oak (60% new). Intense blackberry, spice, licorice and pepper join hands with the tannins to balance the impact of the French oak. All good, as they say. Drink to: 2037; Price: $60.00; Date Tasted: Feb 2020; Alcohol: 14%; Rating: 95 Points; James Halliday; Wine Companion
