Gioiello Estate was the chosen name for this family winery, in recognition of past generations of the Schiavello family who worked at a property named Gioiello (‘jewel’ in Italian), perched above a hillside town in Calabria, Italy.

Shiraz grapes selected from the Mt Concord block are handpicked, de-stemmed and crushed into open-top fermenters. The wine is then gently pressed and matured in French oak barriques for 18 months. Barrel selected cool-climate Syrah offers a perfume of spicy plums with toasty oak characters. The palate is textural and mouth-filling with flavours of plum, chocolate and clove.

The grapes hail from the lower reaches of Mount Concord, with an elevation of 650 metres. Hand-harvested, destemmed and crushed into open-top fermenters, before they were gently pressed and maturated in French oak barriques for 18 months, 40% of which were new. Deep maroon hue, there is good concentration on the nose, with dark fruits, boysenberries, animal hides, leather, mushrooms, coffee grinds, chocolate and cherries. Seamless with good acidity and fine balance, this is a wine of medium length and fine tannins. A fine example of a cooler climate Syrah, enjoy this over the next four to six years and more.
