Dave Fletcher is a very talented young winemaker with an extreme passion for Nebbiolo. He is sourcing fruit from carefully selected Vineyards both here and in Northern Italy with the sole intention of producing his own style of single Vineyard Nebbiolo. Dave respects the tradition of the variety but prefers to make his wines in a modern style with balance and fruit purity very high on his agenda. The Fletcher wines are an incredible study in the enigma that is the Nebbiolo grape. As Dave has spent more time in the vineyards of Piedmont his list of wines has grown too.
This is a wine of power and elegance. As a blend of 1/3 Nebbiolo, 1/3 Cabernet Sauvignon and 1/3 Merlot, you would expect the latter two varieties to dominate, however, the Nebbiolo truly shines over the top of both of them. The nose immediately indicates the floral nature of Nebbiolo, the body through the mouth speaks of the density and depth of flavour of the other two varieties, but the finish is a tannin kick that can only come from the one true king, Nebbiolo…..
This wine changes its grape make up annually, but relies on a set play list. There is Nebbiolo, Cabernet and Merlot usually, and always delivers ridiculous value. This year the Cabernet sits up high in the glass. Beautifully ripe and confident cassis and cedary notes. It smells like something from Bolgheri or high tier Bordeaux, even the upper echelons of Coonawarra match this fruit expression and restraint in equal measure. The mouthfeel is next level. Tannins for days and it is this grip that I expect from this wine, you can chew your way through it, or load up the weber with a big bistecca and lots of salt. You need food with this, you’ll want food with this. You’ll also be rewarded if you can tuck this away for 5 years too.
