When Hilde and Ian (Duke) Ranson sold their clothing manufacturing business in 1998, they were able to fulfil a long-held dream of establishing a vineyard in the Porongurup subregion of Great Southern with the acquisition of a 65ha farm at the foot of the Porongurup Range. They planted shiraz and cabernet sauvignon and riesling. Hilde, a successful artist, designed the beautiful, scalloped, glasswalled cellar door sales area, with its mountain blue cladding. The appointment of Rob Diletti as winemaker will, if it were possible, increase the quality of the wines.
Wide, open fermenters and extended skin contact adds intensity and depth to the berry, earthy characters. Beautifully balanced with new French oak. The wine should age wonderfully for 20 years plus (and more)! Duke Ranson
Deeply coloured. A superb cabernet that will be calling the shots for decades to come. Its richness is spectacular because it parallels the wine's power. Endless peaks of supple blackcurrant and cassis make light of the varietal tannins that can dog cabernet. The price rendered me speechless. Drink to: 2048; Price: $35.00; Date Tasted: Sep 2019; Alcohol: 13.5%; Rating: 98 Points & Special Value Star; James Halliday Wine Companion
Deep and bright purple colour. Opaque and confident. Loads of oak-spice, dark soy, black and blue berries, a dried herb underbelly. Elegant and perfectly ripe - French oak adding spice and providing the platform for exceptional fruit to shine. This is a glorious wine. Huge respect for winemaking here. Ranked #1 Cabernet Sauvignon from 2018 Great Southern. Drink: 2019 to 2031; Price: $40.00; Alcohol: 13.5%; Rating: 95 Points; Nick Butler; The Real Review
