Specialising in cool climate wine, Delatite’s winery and vineyards are on rolling hills at the base of Mt Buller in north-east Victoria. It was established in 1968 by Robert and Vivienne Ritchie and now run by their son David. Our approach to winemaking has been forged from the family’s history of working with the land in Victoria for over 170 years.
The Estate Gewürztraminer fruit was all hand-picked and whole bunch pressed to retain the distinct flavours that Gewürztraminer is famous for. The juice was fermented in tank and in large oak puncheons, exclusively by wild yeast to increase the complexity and spiciness of the wine. It then spend six month on lees, in both tank and puncheons, being stirred every few weeks before bottling.
A pioneer with this variety, the estate has really lifted its game. Once, aromatics were too often sacrificed for ill-conceived attempts to retain freshness. The result may have been higher acidity, but the phenolics were ropy and the exuberance of this most-exuberant variety, lost. Not any more. A resinous yellow segues to punchy notes of rose water, lychee and orange blossom. Ginger, even. Dutifully fresh, but more importantly, texturally detailed with sound use of oak. Long and eminently satisfying. Among the national benchmarks.
