The new faces behind the Curtis Family Vineyards are Mark, Thomas & Jenna Curtis, with the guidance of their father, Claudio Curtis who lives on the vineyard just outside McLaren Vale. The name Curtis is thought to derive from Curtius, a noble and wealthy family of the First and Second Centuries AD, the Roman Empire era originating from the Latinium people.
Martins Vineyards sources fruit from a combination of owned vineyards and premium McLaren Vale growers. The blend of individual vineyard and sub-regional characteristics is the key to the resulting style. Sub regions are Blewitt Springs, McLaren Flat, Willunga and McLaren Vale.
Offering lavish opulence with seductive sophistication, the wine shows black/blueberry, perfumed dark spice, cedar and game characters on the nose. It's immensely powerful and concentrated, displaying outstanding depth and multi-layered mouthfeel, wonderfully enhanced by plush texture and perfectly pitched polished tannins. Supple, warming red with plum, raspberry, spice, anise, liquorice, dark chocolate and spicy oak flavours. The oak is fairly dominant at this stage, although I expect it to integrate within a few years. Date Tasted: December 2021; Drink: 2021 to 2039; Price: $150.00; Alcohol: 14%; Rating: 95 Points; Bob Campbell MW; The Real Review
A long cold soak of 20 days then pressed to new French oak for fermentation and 18–24 months' maturation. A beautifully composed wine that transported me to another realm, following this producer's American-oak-singed cuvées. Another powerful wine, to be sure, but the relief of whole-berry pulpiness meshed with skilfully gleaned tannins provides joy. Bergamot, violet, dark cherry and the cedar scents of the oak cladding all find confluence, while driving long across the palate. This will age well. Rest assured. Drink to: 2030; Price: $150.00; Date Tasted: August 2021; Alcohol: 14%; Rating: 94 Points; James Halliday Wine Companion
