Founded by Phillip Moraghan and Jenifer Kolkka in 1991, Jenifer has been the sole owner of Curly Flat since 2017. The focus has always been on the vineyard, a dedicated team ensuring quality is never compromised. Matt Harrop is now overseeing production.

A complex nose with many layers. Floral aromatics of violets & lavender merge with red fruits ranging from wild strawberry to Satsuma plum. The entrancing spectrum then runs into more savoury territory of game meats and earthen richness, framed by alluring oak spice.

The fruit here is backward, in a good way. It tastes of red cherry and plum with an earthen, sweet-sour edge, though bunches of twig, juniper and general herb notes are at play too, if in an integrated way. Complexity, it certainly has covered. There’s excellent tannin here, a solid-if-fine-grained frame, though it’s not delivered at the expense of flow. This moves along in a brooding, thoughtful way, as if concerned about its future, not that it needs to be. Everything, for this wine, in time, will be just fine. Date: Jun 2023; Alcohol: 13.7%; Closure: Screwcap; Drink: 2026-2033+; Rated: 94+ Points; Campbell Mattinson; The Wine Front
