It has been a remarkable journey for Clonakilla. When John Kirk planted the first vines in 1971 he had no idea that his vineyard would one day be celebrated as one of the best in the country. Along the way there have been trials and tribulations as well as moments of unprecendented success. Over time something important has become clear: Murrumbateman and Shiraz are one of those rare combinations in the world of wine that can produce something truly exciting.
The Shiraz Vioginer is a selection of the best Shiraz Viognier parcels, crafted from the Murrumbateman vineyard.
Has the best colour of the '12 Clonakilla red wines, hardly a surprise; the bouquet is supremely fragrant, almost flowery/scented, the palate instantaneously imprinting its total harmony and balance; fruit, oak and tannins are all seamlessly interwoven, the length prodigious. Low yields were the secret. Rating: 97 Points; Drink By: 2032; Date Tasted: 10 Apr 2013; Alcohol: 13%; James Halliday Wine Companion (Winner of the James Halliday Wine Companion Award for Best Shiraz Viognier)
A lighter, more savoury and more perfumed Clonakilla that promises exceptional longevity. It’s explosively fragrant, exotically spicy and refreshingly tangy, loaded with potpourri, cardamom, dried flowers, Campari, white pepper and rose hip over an elegant core of morello cherries. Lively acidity meets superfine, impeccably crafted tannins of immense presence. Cellar for a decade and drink with game. Rating: 96 Points; Drinking: 2022-2032; Tyson Stelzer; Wine Taste
