Named after the company's Omaka Vineyard, this typically powerful, full-flavoured wine is hand-picked at sites on the south side of the Wairau Valley, fermented with indigenous yeasts in French oak barriques (about 40 per cent new), and given a full, softening malolactic fermentation. The 2017 vintage is bright, light lemon/green, with a fragrant, slightly smoky bouquet. Mouthfilling, it has rich grapefruit and peach flavours, showing good complexity, finely integrated oak, and a smooth, very harmonious finish. Michael Cooper

Complexity is part of this superlative wine's appeal with seductive toast, clove, honey, biscuit, lemon zest, citrus peel and struck match aromatics. The palate is rich and rounded with a laser-etched level of acidity and ripe stone fruit, toast and creamy flavours. Wow. Rating: 98 Points; Decanter World Wine Awards 2019

That this wine romps in at under $30 is a total headscratcher, because it outclassed wines three times the price and it can even be found discounted to $19.99 – which is even crazier! "Such an outstanding wine," declared Yvonne. "Perfumed with spiced popcorn and grilled grapefruit, it's richly layered with stonefruit, struck match and caramelised oak elements." Dish Magazine
