Alkoomi Wines is one of WA's largest family owned and operated wine producers. Owners, Sandy and Rod Hallett, together with their children, Laura, Emily and Molly represent the third and fourth generation living and working on the Alkoomi property in Frankland River. It is this family's love and commitment to the place they chose in the Great Southern, as well as Alkoomi's unique combination of gravelly loam soils, warm sunny days and cool nights during the ripening season that produce grapes of intense varietal character and a sense of place.
The estate grown fruit was harvested in the early hours of the morning, preserving the delicate varietal flavours that define this cool climate, aromatic wine. All fermentation was carried out in stainless steel, at cool temperatures to preserve the freshness and vibrancy of the fruit.
Very youthful in appearance, almost water-white. Citrus, white flower and a cool slate edge on the nose. Citrus, pith, guava and candied ginger flavours, quite generously flavoured but with lovely poise and precision. Really crunchy and zesty acidity, a lick of grippy phenolics, a very complete riesling. Ranked #1 of 30 2021 Riesling from Great Southern. Date Tasted: October 2021; Drink: 2021 to 2036; Price: $18.00; Alcohol: 12.5%; Rating: 95 Points; The Real Review
What could be nicer than tasting a few Rieslings early in the morning? Actually, I know, finding the RRP on the side of a bottle, though not in this case. Anyway, can be found for around $17 at retail. Green apple, lime, white flowers and spice. It’s tight, straight-backed, with a green apple and grapefruit bite and tang, a light dusty texture, and a zesty acid-laden finish of good length. Pretty much classic Great Southern Riesling at a fair price. Tasted: November 2021; Alcohol: 12.5%; Price: $21; Closure: Screwcap; Drink: 2021-2027; Rated: 91 Points; Gary Walsh; The Wine Front
