3 drops began with a family farm and a vision- a vision to produce premium wines and extra virgin olive oil whilst maintaining the integrity of the land for generations to come. Southwest of Mount Barker in the heart of the acclaimed Great Southern wine region of Western Australia, vines and olive trees flourish side by side in the cool, pristine climate. The 3drops vineyard comprises 15 fertile hectares planted with varieties of Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Shiraz. Italian, Greek and Spanish varieties of olive trees thrive alongside the vines.
Ripe fruit notes of nectarine and peach, alongside a hint of grapefruit. These fruit characters are complemented by complex mealy aromas and subtle French oak. Fresh, lively acidity provides a tight and linear structure and an elongated, succulent and lingering finish. A wine that is approachable in its youth but will develop over the next 7-8 years.
This is a good example of why it is a mistake to tar all regions with the same vintage brush. The reason being that while 2019 might have been quite challenging in other regions it resulted in some excellent wines in the Great Southern. In fact, this turned out to be an excellent vintage for chardonnay in the Great Southern. It was cooler but the ripening period allowed the flavours to generate excellent intensity and character. Deep and concentrated melony grapefruit with a roasted cashew, vanilla bean, and nectarine stone fruit swirling through the middle palate. A little minerality helps it hold the line. Balanced and poised, which is what you would expect from a winemaker like Rob Diletti. Drink to: 2021 - 2026; Price: $30.00; Rating: 93 Points; Ray Jordan
