Yalumba Hand Picked Shiraz Viognier 2012
Yalumba was founded in 1849 by Samuel Smith, British migrant and English brewer, who had brought his family to Angaston seeking a new life. After purchasing a 30-acre parcel of land just beyond the southern-eastern boundary of Angaston, Smith and his son began planting the first vines by moonlight. Samuel named his patch "Yalumba" – aboriginal for "all the land around". Five generations and 160 years later Yalumba, Australia's oldest family owned winery, has grown in sizeand stature, embodying all that has made the Australian wine success story the envy of winemakers the world over.
Yalumba Distinguished Sites is a family of exceptional wines, carefully sourced and masterfully crafted to capture the true essence of specific, special sites within the Barossa. These wines are intriguing, distinct and true to the unique parcel of dirt that inspired their creation, while remaining rooted firmly in the heart of the Barossa.
The concept of blending Shiraz and Viognier was derived from the great French wine region of the Northern Rhône – the Côte Rôtie area in particular. Using only the best Eden Valley fruit, the wine is rich in concentrated fruit flavour. Traditionally, the two different grape varieties for this wine have predominately been crushed and fermented together.
Full depth crimson red in colour. The aroma opens with the fresh brightness of lifted spices, blackcurrants, cherries and lavender-violet florals and subtle white pepper hints. A medium to full bodied wine packed with dark fleshy cherry fruits and anise. This is an elegant wine with a tight framework of chalky tannins that exhibit its Eden Valley provenance. Match with roast duck.
