Yalumba has pioneered the growing and making of Viognier in Australia since 1980. We have had over 30 years of viticultural and winemaking experience working with this alluring variety. After harvest about 60% of the fruit was gently pressed directly to barrels, the rest to a stainless steel tank. The juice was handled with passive oxidation, allowing the wine to ferment with indigenous yeasts, natural to the vineyard. The wine was left on lees, which with regular batonnage for 10 months increased the complexity and creaminess and further heightened the palate weight.

Yalumba set the bar very high when it decided to make viognier its champion variety. Its Virgilius is Australia's best (and priced accordingly), but this wine has many of the characters of Virgilius with its complex pear and biscuity aromas; there is no oak even though the bouquet has barrel ferment-like complexity, the palate luxuriantly rich before the coup de grace of its fresh, crisp finish. If I want to sum up viognier in fruit flavours, textures and aromas, this is it. The essence of viognier for us’, explains winemaker Louisa Rose. Richness of apricot but retains great freshness to sniff on. Honey, honeysuckle, pretty floral characters, vanilla whiffs. Lots going on in perfume. Ample in the mouth, rich, creamy texture, great length, sticks to the palate with tacky fruit sweetness and finishes with a little drizzle of acidity, tightening the wine. Viognier can be as finicky as Pinot Noir to work with; terroir and wine mastery have to be pretty perfect to show Viognier's best, but Yalumba has it smack on. Yalumba Viognier 2014 is straight forward excellent with its hallmark, peach, apricot stone fruit and honey-ginger flavours. The wine is full and oily on the palate with well-defined mineral, ripe peach and savoury notes met with a persistent acidity and a long length.
