Located to the east of Albany in WA’s Great Southern region, the Willoughby Park estate is a hidden gem. The property is found in extraordinary country at the extreme end of the Porongurup Ranges, on the left flank of the Kalgan River. In the words of James Halliday, it is a ‘mighty mouse of a vineyard’.
The vines are less than 20kms from the chilly waters of the Southern Ocean which brings cooling summer breezes, slowing the ripening of the grapes and increasing intense flavour development. Terroir, natural climatic advantage and sensitive viticulture come together in this place of beauty and potential - a handful of Kalgan soil is a handful of an historic landscape, black pea granite overlying black gravelly loams. Even to the novice eye there is something about the texture and unique blackness that speaks of something out of the ordinary. The IronRock wines are the flagship of the winery - stunning single site wines named after the rocky beds of their Kalgan RIver vineyard in which their oldest vines grow and flourish - and include a superb Riesling, as well as the more traditional WA varietals.
Brilliant Pale Straw. Complex aromas of citrus blossom, zest of lemon with subtle nuttiness and toast. Beautiful with prawns, ocean fish and oysters! Hand-picked from the best patch of the vineyard, chilled, whole bunch-pressed, wild-fermented, a portion in used French oak.
