Established in 1963 and with an annual production of less than 1000 cases in total, Wantirna Estate ranks among the elite of the Yarra Valley icons. Hand crafted terror-driven wines are a reflection of meticulous attention to detail in all aspects of viticulture and winemaking, and a vineyard site that is naturally low-yielding. "You don't need too many fingers to count the number of 'cult' wineries of the 1970s and early 1980s that are still in the hands of their original owners. Fewer still are actually performing better today than ever before. Wantirna Estate is one such winery and its modern success is a culmination of experience, the introduction of fresh ideas and a proven ability to learn. Jeremy Oliver

The vineyard has three distinct blocks of Pinot Noir and these are all hand harvested separately. Despite the vineyard area being only 10 acres in total, the different blocks each deliver quite unique characters and often there is up to two weeks’ difference in the harvest dates. The mature block - with vines dating back to the early 1970s, gives the wine its savoury tones and fine tannins. The Front Block fruit is spicy whilst the Fruit Tree block is generously fruity. Each component adds complexity when blended together, making the style of Pinot Noir that Wantirna Estate is known for. Maryann Egan - Wantirna Estate

Beautifully structured wine. It’s all built on steel rail lines of minerally tannin and driving, refreshing acidity. A sinewy wine. Dry cherry, sap, woodsmoke, juicy cranberry. Feels taut throughout. Needs time to settle. To breathe. But is top class. Rating: 95 Points; Drink: 2015-2024; Date Tasted: August 2015; Alcohol: 13%; Campbell Mattinson - The Wine Front
