Voyager Estate Chenin Blanc 2015
This impeccably run Estate crafts a set of wines that ooze style and class. Even better, the quality just keeps getting better and better, reflecting the continual evolution in the vineyard and winery. It was Michel Wright who immaculately built this property into the beacon it has become today. While Voyager's founder and visionary sadly passed away in 2012, he left a powerful legacy of an absolute commitment to quality that today pervades every corner of Voyager. The Estate remains family owned, with Michael’s daughter, Alex Burt (nee Wright), matching her father's fanatical attention to detail with an environmental conscience that has opened another important chapter in the history of this Estate.
We are predicting great things from Voyager in regards to Chenin Blanc. Steve James and Co are busy experimenting with picking dates and different kinds of vessel maturation with a view to taking this enigmatic variety to new heights. It has to be said though, Voyager are already doing a stirling job-not surprising given their fruit comes from some of the first plantings on the Estate (in the late 1970s).
From 30+-year-old vines the 2014 is typical of Voyager's thirst-quenching style yet far from standard-issue Chenin. Citrus and red apple and an undertone of tropical fruit combine nicely here, with Chenin's characteristic bite of welcome acidity. Full of aromatic lime and juicy-ripe flavour, this has impressive length too.
